When I tied my first fly, a Black Pennell in September 1976 under the guidance of Ken Ledward, a wonderful Welsh fly tier and gentleman, little did I know that it would lead to a lifetime involved with flies and flytying. I immediately fell in love with both the craft and the materials that go with it.

Not happy with the PVC flyline technology of the day, Paul Burgess, a mad keen flyfisher, who also happened to be a qualified engineer, set about changing the process by which modern flylines are manufactured. Moving away from the traditional tower system, Paul began extruding fly lines with computer controlled systems that allowed for control over production accuracy previously thought impossible.

Over a century ago, Richard Wheatley set a standard of craftsmanship which has been maintained with pride by his sons and grandsons. Today the 'Wheatley Fly Box' is known and prized by fly fishermen throughout the world, tested and proved by their fathers and grandfathers. Richard Wheatley, founder of the company, was born in 1827. At the age of 13 he went to work for a maker of pearl buttons. In 1844 he was apprenticed to a maker of pocket books and fly books, where he served a four year apprenticeship, after which he started his own business in 1860. During the early days, a 'fishing pocket book' was considered a fisherman's basic accessory. Normally they were made in leather with numerous pockets and parchment dividers.
The Drennan tackle company was founded in 1967 when its current Managing Director, Peter Drennan, began producing a small range of Balsawood floats in his mother's garage. Having served his angling apprenticeship with some of the finest anglers of that era; Dick Walker, Peter Stone, the Taylor Brothers and England's first World Champion, Bill Lane, the young Peter Drennan was already recognised as something of a tackle expert. With the ability to design superior floats and the craft skill to make them, the original one man business expanded steadily from those humble garage beginnings.
