It has become one of Irelands most popular salmon lakes for early season spring fish and grilse.

Lough Corrib (18)

Lough Corrib is located in Galway, the west of Ireland. The River Corrib or Galway river connects the lake to the sea at Galway. It is the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland and second largest on the island of Ireland (after Lough Neagh). It covers 176 km² and lies mostly in County Galway with a small area of its northeast corner in County Mayo.

The first canal on the island of Ireland was cut in the 12th century. Known as the Friar's Cut, it allowed boats to pass from Lough Corrib to the sea at Galway.

Lough Corrib was designated a Ramsar site on 16 June 1996. It has also been designated a Special Area of Conservation.

The fly collection in this section contains just some of the patterns that are succesful on Lough Corrib  throughout the fishing year..We will be updating this section with more information on the lake and the flies used there as we go through the 2018 season.

Despite serious pollution issues in the 1980's and early 1990's the lake has made a remarkable recovery and today is back again as one of the premier wild brown trout fisheries in Ireland.

Mallard & Claret

The Mallard and Claret is probably one of the best known of Traditional Irish wet Flies. (See my large lake wet fly ranges)

This fly body is tied with:

Rollover Mayfly Yellow

This is one of a series of patterns designed by one of Ireland's most famous fly dressers Patsy Deery of Cootehill. Patsy is the author of "Irish Mayflies-A fly-fishers guide."

Patsy designed the style of fly to imitate the newly hatched mayfly duns as they are blown across the surface of the water. This is a deadly pattern when fished across the wave, twitched and bobbed. It is a great favourite on Loughs Mask and Carra but will work literally anywhere mayfly are hatching. There are two other versions Roll-Over Grey and Roll-Over Olive.

CDC Mosley Mayfly

This is a variation of the original pattern which I designed  with the addition of pink CDC Feathers. This  helps both the floatation and the mobility of the fly.

I think that the mobility of  CDC feathers is an attraction particularly in flies that are being fished static. It has proved very popular since its invention a few seasons back.

French Partridge Mayfly Wet

Wet Mayfly patterns are numerous and vary greatly in colour, some bearing little resemblance to the hatching natural fly. My selection includes some of the older classic patterns e.g. Lansdale and Lough Erne Gosling as well as modern flies with muddler heads and bodies of gold and pearl. Fished in teams of three on floating or intermediate lines they are all proven fish catchers during the Mayfly season and beyond.

Rollover Mayfly Olive

A great little Mayfly from Patsy Deery to have on your mayfly trip. The design encourages the fly to roll over on its side in a breeze and this movement on the surface is very attractive to trout.See also Rollover Grey and Rollover Yellow.
