Lough Sheelin Lough Sheelin

Lough SheelinLough Sheelin (from Irish Loch Síodh Linn, meaning "lake of the fairy pool"), in standard Irish Loch Síleann, is a limestone freshwater lake in Ireland located in County Westmeath, County Meath and County Cavan near the villages of Finnea (also spelled Finea) and Mountnugent and the town of Granard, (County Longford).

Despite serious pollution issues in the 1980's and early 1990's the lake has made a remarkable recovery and today is back again as one of the premier wild brown trout fisheries in Ireland.

The fly collection in this section contains just some of the patterns that are succesful there throughout the fishing year..We will be updating this section with more information on the lake and the flies used there as we go through the 2018 season.

Green Wulff

Wulff patterns first became popular in Ireland in the Mid 1990's. They were immediately successful .The most popular pattern early on was the Grey wulff which was fished as a spent gnat imitation.Gradually other patterns followed and this green pattern is probably the most popular of them. It is a great fly during hatches of green drake.

Moss Mayfly Grey

This is one of a trio of authentic Dennis Moss Mayfly patterns in my collection. It is extremely popular in the West of Ireland. Dennis says of it. "This fly imitates the last phase of the Mayfly cycle-the adult spinner or spent phase.I have huge confidence in this and the Ginger mayfly, and whereas the Ginger is the fly for the duns, the Grey is the pattern for the gnat rise.Towards the latter half of the Mayfly hatch, and for the evening fall of spent fly,the Grey comes into its own.It is a big trout fly with a long pedigree.I have yet to fish a lough in Ireland where the trout refuse it."(Quote from "Trout and Salmon- The Essential Guide to Irish Lough Fishing" by Dennis Moss.) See also Moss Mayfly Green and Moss Mayfly Ginger.

Black Artic Fox Spent (Moss)

NEW Trout Fly for 2018

This "Black Artic Fox Spent" pattern was given to me recently by Dennis Moss. It is one of his favourites for spent gnat fishing everwhere from Lough Derg to Lough Sheelin. The soft wing and flat hackle style make it lie low in the surface film and it is easily taken under by trout. A must for the serious Gnat Fisherman in 2018.

CDC Mosley Mayfly

This is a variation of the original pattern which I designed  with the addition of pink CDC Feathers. This  helps both the floatation and the mobility of the fly.

I think that the mobility of  CDC feathers is an attraction particularly in flies that are being fished static. It has proved very popular since its invention a few seasons back.
